From the blue side: Science Blogs

Where I was? What was I doing? Perhaps, a cruise in the Arctic? Perhaps, conferences, meetings? No, that was not the case. It was something much more exciting: I was on maternity leave until mid-June, and that is a time to enjoy with your baby, and simply do nothing else. I could tell you thousands of things about it, but for that there are marvelous maternity blogs. After that, I was quite busy starting to work again, but on the top of that, honestly, I didn’t feel inspired to write in the blog. You can be thinking: ‘Really? Do you need any kind of inspiration to write a science blog?’ And, you’re right in some sense. Science is not art, but still. I’m convinced that I do better Science when I feel inspired, or let’s say really motivated.

¿Dónde he estado y qué he estado haciendo? ¿Quizá una campana en el Ártico? ¿Quizá, conferencias, reuniones? Pues no. Ha sido algo mucho mejor que todo eso: He estado de baja maternal hasta mediados de Junio, y no me he planteado hacer nada más que disfrutar del tiempo con mi hijo. Os podría contar miles de cosas sobre ello, pero para eso hay cientos de blogs maravillosos sobre maternidad. Después, he estado muy ocupada incorporándome al trabajo, pero sobretodo, la verdad, es que no me he encontrado con ganas de escribir en el blog. Podéis pensar: ‘¿De verdad? ¿Hace falta inspiración para escribir un blog sobre ciencia?’ Y en parte no os falta razón. La Ciencia no es arte, pero aun así. Estoy convencida de que hago mejor mi trabajo, que al final es sobre lo que escribo, cuando estoy inspirada, o dejémoslo en muy motivada.

Puff, me ha costado pero al fin he encontrado el momento y las ganas, todo hay que decirlo, de retomar el blog. Durante un par de semanas estuve considerando la posibilidad de dejarlo temporalmente y retomarlo quizá en el futuro. Sin el tiempo necesario los posts no quedan finalmente como me gustaría. A vosotros os resulta menos interesante lo que os pueda contar y a mí me desmotiva el no hacerlo bien. Sin embargo, he cambiado de opinión por tres motivos principalmente.

Puff, I struggled but finally I found the time and the mood, I must recognize, to restart the blog. For some weeks, I was considering to leave it temporarily and pick up again maybe in the future. Without enough time, I am not able to finish the posts as I would like. At the end, what I can tell you is less interesting for you, and not to do it right discourages me. However, I have changed my mind mainly due to three reasons.

Primero, durante las vacaciones he tenido tiempo de pensar y darme cuenta de que a lo largo de este casi primer año he aprendido muchas cosas de vosotros y de otros buenísimos blogs que visito habitualmente. No con todo lo que leo necesariamente estoy de acuerdo, pero de eso también se aprende. Quizá ‘mi fórmula’ no me lleve nunca a ser famosa en la red pero estoy convencida de que el hablaros de mi trabajo y el trabajo de otros es importante, aun cuando eso implique a veces el tener que hacer algo parecido a una revisión de artículos traducida al lenguaje cotidiano. Bastante aburrido lo sé, pero la ciencia en general no es divertida. Puede ser interesante, fascinante e incluso excitante a veces. Puedes contarla de manera amena e incluso hacer algún chiste de vez en cuando. Pero es lo que es. No hay que engañar a nadie. Es como si animas a un amigo a ir a correr contigo y pretendes hacerle creer que no se va a cansar: Es mentira. Hacer ejercicio requiere un esfuerzo; y para mí mi blog tiene sentido para contaros lo que sabemos hoy sobre nuestro clima y océanos y no lo que se pensaba hace 20 años. Para eso ya tenéis la tele. Así que siento si a veces lo que cuento es espeso.

First of all, during the holidays I had time to think, and I realized that along this year I have learnt many things from you and other very good blogs that I visit regularly. Not with everything that I read I necessarily agree, but you can learn also from it. Maybe my recipe will never make me famous on the net, but I am convinced that telling you about my work and the work of others is important, even if sometimes it means having to do something too much close to a review of scientific papers translated into common language. Quite boring, I know, but Science is not especially fun. It can be interesting, fascinating, and even exciting sometimes. You can tell it in an entertaining way and even make some jokes at some point. However, Science is Science. No need to deceive. It’s similar to invite a friend to go jogging with you and try to convince him/her that he/she won't tire: It’s a lie. Exercise requires physical effort; and, for me, my blog makes sense to tell you what we know today about our climate and oceans rather than what we thought 20 years ago. For that, you can watch the TV. Thus, I’m sorry if sometimes what I tell you is too dense.

También tengo ahora claro que para hablaros de todo esto no debo desprestigiar, ni criticar por criticar el trabajo de nadie. En ese plan, y sin los argumentos necesarios que prueben mis hipótesis y rechacen las de otros, nadie me aceptaría un artículo. Aunque hay muchas cosas respecto a las publicaciones científicas con las que puedo no estar de acuerdo, con este principio lo estoy completamente y creo que debe distinguir la comunicación de la ciencia sea cual sea su forma de expresión.

Now, I t’s also clear for me that to speak about all these things I don’t need to discredit or criticize for criticizing the work of anyone. In this way, and without the necessary arguments to prove my hypothesis and reject the hypothesis from others, nobody would accept me an article. Although there are several things about scientific papers with which I don’t agree, with this principle I do completely, and I think it should distinguish science communication whatever its form of expression.

Por último, como no sólo de pan vive el hombre, hay muchas otras cosas que me gustan de mi trabajo y que también pretendía contaros cuando empecé este blog. A veces me ha parecido que contaros otros aspectos mi vida podía parecer banal y superficial, pero he pensado que eso deberéis juzgarlo vosotros y si a alguien no le gusta, pues que haga zapping. Además, no dejarme influenciar tanto por lo que otros piensen de mí esta en mi lista de buenos propósitos para este año. Así que, no me voy a cortar en contaros nada que me apetezca.

Finally, because man does not live by bread alone, there are many things I like about my work and also wanted to tell you when I started the blog. However, sometimes I felt that telling about other aspects of my life could seem banal and superficial, but I guess you are who must judge it, and if someone does not like can do zapping. Besides, 'not let what others can think about me influence me too much' is on my list of good purposes for the New Year. Thus, I won’t be shy about telling you what I would like.
