Ayer, en la página de facebook os dejaba el enlace a la nota de prensa que ha publicado el AWI (por si alguien anda perdido, AWI son las siglas del Alfred Wegener Instititute donde trabajo) en alemán a ráiz del interés despertado en distintos medios tras la publicación del artículo 'Increasing amounts of Arctic Ocean deep waters in the Greenland Sea' en la revista Geophysical Research Letters, del que os he hablado (aquí o aquí) . Se me hace raro publicar una especie de entrevista a mí misma en mi blog, pero ahí la tenéis. Creo que os será bastante fácil de entender, y si no ya sabéis click arriba en dejar un comentario y preguntad lo que queráis.

Yesterday on the facebook page, I left you the link to the press release that AWI (in case someone is lost, AWI is the acronym of the Alfred Wegener Institute where I work) has published in German due to the interest shown by different media after the publication of the article 'Increasing Amounts of Arctic Ocean deep waters in the Greenland Sea' in the scientific journal Geophysical Research Letters. I have previously told about it (here or here). It's kind of strange to post a sort of interview to myself on my blog, but there you have it. I think it will be quite easy to understand, but you know to do in case you have any question: click above 'comentarios' and ask whatever you want.

Las aguas profundas del Mar de Groenlandia se calientan más rápido que el resto del Océano.

Bremerhaven 23 de septiembre 2013. El calentamiento actual de las aguas profundas del Mar de Groenlandia es alrededor de diez veces mayor que el calentamiento medio estimado para el resto del Océano. Los científicos del Instituto Alfred Wegener  -Centro Helmholtz para la Investigación Polar y Marina- han publicado recientemente estos resultados en la revista Geophysical Research Letters. Para su estudio, analizaron los datos de temperatura disponibles desde 1950 hasta 2010 en el Mar de Groenlandia, la cual es una zona oceánica situada justo al sur del Océano Ártico.

Bremerhaven 25th September 2013. Recent warming of the Greenland Sea Deep Water is about ten times higher than warming rates estimated for the global ocean. Scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research recently published these findings in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. For their study, they analysed  temperature data from 1950 to 2010 in the abyssal Greenland Sea, which is an ocean area located just to the south of the Arctic Ocean.

Some comments to fringe comments

Durante 5 minutos me pareció que volvía al Artico de la que volaba la semana pasada de Frankfurt a Bremen. During 5 minutes of a flight from Frankfurt to Bremen the last week, I had the impression that I was back in the Arctic. 

Siento mucho el retraso, no sólo porque tenía cosas importantes que contaros y no lo he hecho sino porque he de confesar que cuando dejo abandonado el blog me siento culpable. Menos mal que no me pagan por ello, sino no sé qué sería de mí.

Voy a empezar por centrarme en aquello que me parece más urgente de comentar, y sobre lo que muchos de vosotros habréis leído en las últimas semanas. No suelo dejar un post a medias pero el que tenía empezado tendrá que esperar un par de días más porque esto me parece más urgente. ¿Por qué? Pues, simple y llanamente, porque varios comentarios y alguna que otra entrada en un blog me han dejado patidifusa (¡qué graciosa palabra, por cierto!).

1. ¡¡¡Pues no he visto comparar las ciencias relacionadas con el clima en aquellos aspectos relacionados con el cambio climático con la homeopatía!!!
2. ¡¡¡No he leído … que no tenemos motivos por los que preocuparnos por las concentraciones de CO2 en la atmósfera puesto que, aunque aumentando, su concentración es minoritaria en comparación con otros gases que también forman parte de la atmósfera terrestre?
3. …que la actividad volcánica puede conllevar variaciones más significativas de la concentración de CO₂ que la actividad antropogénica?
4. ...que el aumento de CO₂ y de temperatura en los últimos 50-100 no es más que parte de la variabilidad natural?!!!

Intentaré contestar a cada una de estas cosas por separado para quede más claro el porqué de mi estupefacción.

I'm sorry for the delay, not only because I had things to tell you and I didn't do, but because,  honestly, I feel guilty when I leave the blog abandoned. Fortunately, I'm not paid for writing the blog. Otherwise, I don't know how I would handle it.

I will start with the more urgent issue that I think I must explain, and about which you probably have read in the last two weeks. Normally, I don't start a post until I have finished the previous one, but in this case I will make an exception. This is more urgent. Why? Well, simply, because I have seen several comments and some post in a blog that have completely astounded me. 

1. Can you believe that I have read … how some people compare climate sciences in those aspects related with climate change with homeopathy? !!!
2. … that we don't have reasons to worry about the increase of atmospheric CO₂ because its minor concentration when compared with other gases in the atmosphere? 
3. … that the volcanic activity can generate more significative variations of  CO₂ concentration than the anthropogenic activity?
4. … that the temperature and CO₂ increase during the last 50-100 years is just  natural variability?

I will give a response to each of these statements separately to make clearer the reasons of my stupefaction. 

Maybe I had a bad week

Antes de que nadie salga corriendo creo que estaría bien deciros que aunque el título del post pinta mal, podéis seguir leyendo sin miedo porque termina bien.

No sé para otros pero para mí lo más difícil de superar en mi trabajo es el miedo a que mi ‘escritura en inglés’ no sea buena. No digo ‘inglés escrito’ en lugar de ‘escritura en inglés’ porque me refiero a la escritura científica, la cual tiene sus peculiaridades. Pensaréis que quizá no sea para tanto; que si no sé cómo se dice algo para eso están los diccionarios. Pues sí, pero no es el vocabulario el que me preocupa. El caso es que la escritura científica, como ya os conté hace tiempo, es bastante estricta en su estilo. De hecho, hay unos cuantos libros escritos sobre el tema. Uno que me gusta especialmente es éste:

‘ScientificWriting. Easy When You Know How. Jenifer Peat. BMJ Books’

Si alguien también siente que necesita ayuda en el tema, se lo recomiendo.

I don’t know for others, but one of the things that I find especially difficult in my work is to overcome the fear that my English Writing isn’t good. Maybe you think that it can’t be so difficult, that in case I don’t know how to say something I can use the dictionary. Yes, I can, and I do, in fact, but the vocabulary isn’t what worries me. The case is that scientific writing, as I told you some time ago, has a quite strict style. Indeed, there are several books on the topic. One that I particularly like is:

‘ScientificWriting. Easy When You Know How. Jenifer Peat. BMJ Books’

  

I recommend it for those of you that feel you need also help on that.

¿Nada nuevo?

Siento la tardanza pero a veces viene bien tomar unos días de descanso para volver a la carga. Bueno, ese no es exactamente el caso, no es que haya estado de vacaciones sino que he tenido bastantes cosas que hacer, y cuando hay que priorizar de momento me siento un poco culpable si dejo de hacer cosas por dedicarle tiempo al blog.

Por otro lado, me he dado cuenta que la temática de mi blog no puede competir en cuanto a frecuencia de publicaciones con otro tipo de blogs porque la ciencia en general, y por extensión la ocenografía, no produce 'noticias' todos los días. Es decir, no todos los días, ni todas las semanas se hacen grandes descubrimientos. Además, los grandes descubrimientos merecen ser mucho más que 'noticias' de un sólo día, que al día siguiente sean olvidados por un 'nuevo titular' más sexy.

Ese es uno de los grandes retos que debe enfrentar la ciencia hoy en día. Ya sabéis que uno de los motivos de empezar este blog es, entre otros, el acercar la oceanografía a todos vosotros. Pero en la era de la información, ¿cómo puede competir la ciencia en general con el ritmo al que hoy las noticias se generan, se difunden y se olvidan?

Es nuestra obligación el intentarlo, pero creo que en ese cometido una parte importante también es trasladaros el que la ciencia es un producto de elaboración muy largo. Esa me parece mucha mejor opción que el acelerar 'nuestro científico proceso de producción'. No creo que la ciencia salga beneficiada de ello.

Quizá esa sea en parte la razón de que hoy en día exista tal presión en el número de publicaciones que debe generar un científico: cuantas más y más rápido mejor. No sé, quizá los mismos que hacemos ciencia deberíamos replantearnos la cuestión.

I’m sorry for the delay, but sometimes it is necessary to take some time. Well, to be honest this is not exactly the case. I haven’t been on holidays. I had a lot of things to do, and for the moment I feel a little guilty if I leave to do other things to write in the blog.

On the other hand, I have realized that the topic of my blog cannot compete in frequency of posts with other blogs because Science in general, and Oceanography in particular, does not provide ‘News’ every day. I mean, not every day a new important discovery takes place. Moreover, the big discoveries are worth to be much more than a single-day news.

This is one of the big challenges that Science must tackle nowadays. As you know, one of the reasons to begin this blog is to approach the oceans and climate sciences to all of you, but in the information age…how can Science compete with the rate at which news are generated, spread and forgotten today?

It is our obligation to try it, but in this mission it is also important to tell you about the long elaboration that Science requires. I think that this is better than to try to accelerate the ‘science production’. Maybe, this is one of reason for the present pressure on scientists to generate a lot of publications: as much as possible in the shortest possible time. Maybe, the own scientists should ask ourselves about this.
